When Did You Last Actually Read Your Telecoms Bill?

Not glanced at the total. Not scrolled past it in your emails. Actually sat down and read it. Line by line. If the honest answer is “never” or “not recently” you are not alone. And from April 1st 2026, that habit just got a little more expensive.

The Price Rises Have Landed

BT and Openreach price increases came into effect on April 1st. For most businesses, that means the next bill is going to be slightly higher than the last one. For some, it will be noticeably higher. Either way, it is a good moment to pause and ask a question that most businesses never think to ask.

What am I actually paying for?

What We Have Been Finding

Over the last month, the Talk UK Telecom team has been out visiting businesses across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and the surrounding area doing free telecoms checks. No sales agenda. Just a proper, independent look at what each business is paying for versus what they are actually using.

What we have found has been eye opening.

Businesses paying for analogue alarm lines where the alarm system was upgraded years ago. The old line is still live. Still being billed. Every single month. Nobody noticed because it just sits quietly on the bill with everything else.

PDQ machine lines in the same situation. The machine was replaced or moved to a different provider. The line it used to run on? Still there. Still costing money.

Old ISDN lines that nobody uses any more, kept active because cancelling them never made it to the top of anyone’s to do list.

And we are finding it on VoIP and hosted phone systems too. Additional features, bolt on services, extra user licences charged every month for things that were never set up properly, never used, or added during a setup process and then forgotten about entirely.

None of this is unusual. It is, honestly, the norm.

Why It Happens

Telecoms bills are complicated by design. There are line rental charges, call bundle charges, number charges, feature charges, and a handful of other line items that most people gloss over because they look roughly the same as last month.

Your telecoms provider is not going to flag this for you. They are not going to call and say “actually, you have not used that feature in 18 months, shall we remove it?” That is not how the industry works.

This is why having someone independent look at your bill makes such a difference. A fresh pair of eyes with no interest in keeping you on anything you do not need.

A Real Example

One business we visited recently was paying for six lines they had not used in over two years. Six. We found it in about twenty minutes. That is not an extreme case. That is a fairly typical Tuesday for us.

The money saved went straight back into the business. The relief on the owner’s face when we showed them was worth showing up for.

What a Free Telecoms Review Actually Involves

We come to you. We sit down with your current bills and your existing setup. We go through everything including your lines, your broadband, your phone system, your mobiles if relevant and we tell you exactly what you are paying for, what you actually need, and what you could cut or consolidate.

No fee. No obligation. No pressure to switch anything.

If we find savings, great. We can help you act on them. If everything looks fine, you will at least know for certain that you are not paying for something you do not need.

Now Is the Right Time

With price rises in effect from April, your next bill is going to be higher than your last one. But it does not have to be as high as your provider wants to make it.
